TREFIC (road TRaffic Improved Calculator) is a model for estimating road traffic emissions, primarily based on the official European COPERT methodology. It allows for the estimation of emissions from road traffic considering various parameters, including:
- Vehicle Fleet Composition
- Road Type
- Average Speed
- Ambient Temperature
- Slope
- Average Load for Heavy Commercial Vehicles
- Degradation Due to Vehicle Age
In addition, TREFIC incorporates algorithms for handling traffic congestion, making it suitable for assessing emissions in scenarios characterized by very low speeds and frequent “stop and go” situations (e.g., traffic lights, toll barriers).
It addresses all major pollutants, including:
- Nitrogen Oxides (NOx)
- Carbon Monoxide (CO)
- Non-Methane Organic Compounds (NMOCs)
- Greenhouse Gases
- Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)
- Heavy Metals
- Many Other Micropollutants
For fine particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), TREFIC includes:
- Emission Calculations: From abrasion of tires, brakes, and road surfaces.
- Re-suspension Calculations: Using the US-EPA method.
TREFIC is highly flexible in terms of output format. It can be fed with results from the most common traffic assignment models and, in addition to being available as a stand-alone product, is fully integrated with other components of ARIANET’s simulation systems.
