Emissions from aviation and maritime transport are experiencing the highest growth rates in the transport sector (almost 130% and 32%, respectively), being the only sector where emissions have increased over the past 20 years. Despite anticipated improvements in fuel consumption, it is estimated that by 2050, aircraft emissions will be 7 to 10 times higher than 1990 levels, and emissions from maritime transport will increase by between 50% and 250%.
The growing contribution to the dynamics that determine air quality makes ports and airports the subject of increasingly detailed studies concerning their environmental issues. Among its activities, ARIANET estimates emissions from all activities related to these infrastructures, assesses the air pollution they produce using micro and macro-scale studies, and provides the opportunity to analyze new emission scenarios following development plans.
