On December 2nd, 2025, KAQFS, the operational Air Quality Forecast System for the territory of Kuwait was presented at KISR. It is built on state-of-the-art physically based 3D atmospheric models, with the support of ARIANET.
On a wide scale, it uses as input information the current meteorology and air quality forecasts produced from global models, zooming progressively from the Arabian Peninsula, then reaching a final detail of 1 km over Kuwait.
Key inputs are also the emissions originating from all human activities: for Kuwait, the ones provided by the latest national inventory made by KISR, and for the surrounding countries the ones coming from the most recent global inventory.
The KAQFS runs automatically every night on IKARUS, the KISR supercomputer, producing forecasts of criteria pollutants for today, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. The system allows to produce air quality maps and indicators covering all the country, complementing the information given by fixed monitoring stations. All the information will be then available to support decision makers in air quality management and to inform the population.
