The BIGEPI project (BIG Data for the Evaluation of Health Effects of Air Pollution in the Italian Population) has been launched, thanks to funding from INAIL under the BRiC 2019 Research Collaboration Call.

The project will utilize data collected from a previous initiative, INAIL-BEEP (https://www.progettobeep.it/index.php), which provided highly detailed maps of atmospheric pollutant concentrations at national, urban, suburban, and rural scales. BIGEPI will build on this by further exploring the connections between environmental factors and health, specifically investigating any links between pollutant exposure and mortality from neurological or neurocognitive disorders.

Through BIGEPI, we will be able to assess the short-term effects of air pollution and temperature across all Italian municipalities, including industrial areas and remediation sites. The results will enhance public awareness of this critical issue, based on evidence from scientific research, enabling local authorities to make informed decisions based on precise data to improve air quality and public health, with particular attention to the most at-risk populations.
