Source Term Estimation (STE) algorithms are designed and used to estimate release location, time and amount of emitted material in all situations where the information about pollutant sources is substantially unknown, starting from local concentration observations (taken downstream).

RetroSPRAY is the “time-backward” version of the Lagrangian dispersion model SPRAY.

RetroSPRAY computes upstream trajectories, backward in time, starting from monitoring measurements. RetroSPRAY effectively calculates a numerical solution of the analytical adjoint of the forward stochastic equation integrated by SPRAY. In fact it performs the same calculation as SPRAY, but with reversed sign in advection terms.
